National Talent Search scheme is a path breaking initiative taken by NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training). It was launched in the year 1963. The objective behind this scheme is to educate and empower the talented youth of India.

  • Vision is to award scholarships to students studying in tenth standard
  • Meritorious students are chosen based on their performance in the written exam conducted by NCERT
  • Candidates appearing in class tenth examination can avail 1000 scholarships through NTSE
  • It honors the students by providing them with monthly financial assistance for pursuing courses in basic sciences, social sciences, commerce.
  • Till P.HD level the students can reap benefits of this scholarship pertaining to courses in basic sciences, social sciences and commerce
  • But for professional courses like engineering, medical, law the assistance is provided up to post-graduation level.
  • Selection is done by a 2 stage process
  • Stage 1- State/UTs conducted by state government
  • Stage 2- Final exam conducted by NCERT
  • The scholarship amount for
  • Candidates of XI and XII standard is INR 1250, per month
  • Undergraduates and post graduates is INR 2000, per month
  • For PH.D. level the amount is fixed as per the UGC norms
  • Stage-2(National) states and Union Territories will be held on 14th May, 2017

Reservation in NTSE Scholarships

The students who would be entitled to avail the scholarships will be selected as per the two stage written exam and also according to the quota fixed.

NTSE Scholarship Exam

Stage 1- State level Exam

  • The application forms for attempting for this exam have to be collected from the state/ut officer
  • Fees for application form and its mode of payment will be instructed by the state/ut officer to the candidate
  • Completed application form, signed by the students’ school principal should submitted back to the officer
  • For general category students it is mandatory to obtain at at least 60% aggregate in class IX for appearing in this exam
  • SC/ST/PH category students, the eligibility criteria to apply is having at least 55% aggregate in class IX
  • It takes place in the month of November

Stage 2- National level Exam

  • All the students who have scored required marks in the state level exam can appear in the national level exam
  • Students who qualify the state level exam can attempt in the stage 2 exam
  • There is no separate application process or fees for attempting this exam
  • Indian students studying abroad in class tenth are eligible for this exam even without appearing in the state level exam
  • This exam takes place in the second week of May
  • There is negative marking in each paper, which means marks will be deducted for every wrong answer


The exam conducting authority issues the admit card of NTSE 2017 in offline mode for both the stages. Candidates can collect their admit card from the chief superintendent of the exam center allotted to them.

Qualifying Marks Required For NTSE Scholarship

General- Students who belong to the general category need to score at least 40% marks in each paper

SC/ST/PH-Candidates belonging to these categories have to score at least 32% marks in each paper

Note- The marks obtained in the language test will not be counted to the final merit
